Religion

I've got a line from a song bouncing around in my brain. 
It says, "all religion ever made of me was just a sinner with a stone tied to my feet".
What do you think? Does "religion" limit us? Does it keep us stuck? What is the role of "religion" in a Christian's life, or in the life of any person?
